Across Uganda, hundreds of thousands of people earn a living from home — weaving baskets, farming vegetables, keeping bees, sewing garments — without ever being recognized as “workers,” with little awareness of their rights and no access to social protection. This project supports Ngalo Buwereza Organization (NBO), Uganda’s national network of home-based workers, in becoming a strong, democratic and effective voice for its more than 7,000 members.
NBO was registered in 2022 and has grown from 121 member organizations at its first General Assembly in 2023 to 126 today. In March 2025, NBO adopted its own constitution and elected its first National Executive Committee, becoming a fully self-governed, member-led organization.
RAISE has partnered with NBO since 2024, supporting its growth through several channels.
Building NBO’s democratic foundation. From 2024 to 2025, RAISE and HomeNet Africa — funded by CISU (Civil Society in Development) — supported NBO through regional meetings, a national workshop and a General Assembly that resulted in NBO’s constitution and its first National Executive Committee.
Strengthening rights and safety. In 2026, RAISE has funded a project — supported by Solidaritet over Grænser (3F) — that trains NBO members in their labour rights and in safe working conditions, and helps establish regional HBW Rights committees across four regions of Uganda.
Building financial independence. RAISE has also helped NBO establish its own Savings and Credit Cooperative (SACCO), so that member groups can access affordable loans instead of costly money lenders. Startup capital has come from private funders and from RAISE’s own fundraising, including volunteers who have collecteddonations for the SACCO.
