Upscaling Insect Production

Through previous CISU projects, BSFL farming in Kyaka II refugee camp and host communities in Kyegegwa District and Mityana District has become a remarkable success with widespread adoption and a thriving local market. However, farmers face critical challenges that hinder the efficiency, sustainability, and scalability of BSFL production.

Challenges include limited and uncoordinated access to organic waste, lack of access to affordable credit, weak organisational structure among BSFL farmer groups, and lack of market coordination and networks. The project will address these barriers, enabling farmers to scale up their BSFL production and achieve the overall project goal of “increasing incomes of refugees and host communities in Uganda through the production of BSFL as a sustainable feed resource”.

The project has four expected outcomes related to addressing the key challenges facing BSFL farmers:

  1. Increased access to organic waste as feed for BSFL production by establishing sustainable biowaste supply chains for BSFL farmers and breeding centers in Mityana, Kyegegwa and Kyaka II refugee camp.
  2. Improved access to affordable credit and savings options for BSFL farmers through savings and loan groups so they can invest in expanding their BSFL production.
  3. Improved market coordination and networking within and across the region.
  4. Strengthening MAMAH’s organizational governance structures and improving staff capacity to effectively monitor, evaluate, and learn from its activities.
